Design
You know the Astro A50 is a gaming headset the second you look at it. It’s trendy to have a stealth design atop your head, and you might even be able to wear them in public without people making fun of you.
However, the Astro A50 goes above and beyond in the design department, offering a sleek design with just a hint of futuristic flare.
The modern, all-black design is fresh if you’re not put off by the amount of branding included. The headband also features measurements so you can be sure it fits.
The piece of plastic at the top of the headband has padding in it to make it more comfortable while you wear it, but it comes off rather easily, so you may find it missing. If you do, it’s easy to replace.
The left ear cup features a static microphone. You can’t move it or retract it, but you can rotate it upward if you need to get it out of the way. While this works well in theory, you always have a microphone sticking out of your ear.
The right side of the headphones has all of your controls. The right ear cup has two buttons labeled ‘voice’ and ‘game.’ Connecting your headphones to the computer will pull up two USB devices, and you can use these buttons to adjust your sound between games and talking to your friends.
The power switch also resides on the right as well as a button to turn on Dolby virtual surround sound, a volume button, and an EQ button. At the bottom of the right ear cup is a charging port for a micro USB cable.
The default ear pads are extremely comfortable, but they’re also removable. You can get a synthetic leather mod kit to replace these ear pads if you want to upgrade them. There aren’t very many gaming headsets that work this way, so it’s a huge bonus.
The USB charging station is where this headset and all of its components really shine. You don’t have to use the USB port on the bottom of the ear cup. You can charge your headset wirelessly as well as check the status of the battery, it’s a connection to your PS4 or PC, the EQ preset, and the Dolby status.

Performance
The Astro A50 isn’t particularly loud, and the seal doesn’t shut out background noise outside of the headphones, which may bother some gamers. If you need good noise cancellation or rumbling, this isn’t the headset for you.
However, when it comes to sound quality, this headset simply can’t be beaten. There are very few other gaming headsets that feature this kind of incredible audio balance. Rather than being bass-heavy like a lot of other gaming headsets, you won’t find that here.
Forget crackling sounds with every explosion. Instead, replace it with crisp, clear sound at all volumes and bass levels.
Especially when taking advantage of the Dolby virtual surround support, you’ll get an immersive experience in any gameplay. Clear, accurate audio alongside excellent visuals will put you in the middle of the game.
Music performance
While this headset is great for gaming, it’s not as great for listening to music. The details and complexity are lost, and the headset is best used for cinematic quality uses. That’s not to say you can’t listen to music, but you likely won’t get the sound quality you want.
However, if you’re looking for a headset primarily for gaming, you could use this one for music every now and then and be just fine.

Logitech G933
The Logitech G933 comes in at a slightly lower price point. However, audio performance and build quality are still excellent. The wireless USB receiver and some wired connection options mean you can use a variety of different devices easily.
It comes with a wide range of EQ settings, colored lighting options, and game profiles. It very easily beats out competition like the Skullcandy PLYR 1, and you might even find that you like it better than the Astro A50.
Design
The Logitech G933 is slightly more sci-fi in appearance. It doesn’t scream ‘gamer’ like the Astro A50 headset, but it may have you feeling a bit like Spock. There are foam pads covered in black cloth on the ear cups and the headband for comfort.
The earpads are nearly rectangular, while the back of them are shaped like pentagons. Just like the Astro A50, the right ear cup contains all of the controls like power, mic mute, programmable G buttons, and volume. It also has the micro USB port for charging as well as an auxiliary port.
There is a boom mic sitting on the front edge of the left ear cup, and it sits flush against the ear cup when it’s not in use. It flips up and down rather than offering a retractable feature.
The pentagon panels on the back of the ear cups are magnetic, so you can detach them easily. Underneath the removable ear cups, you will find the RGB lights that illuminate the G logo on each panel.
The left side hides the wireless USB receiver, and the right side hides the removable battery. Turning on the Logitech G933 headset lights up the G logos and a line of lights that run along the back edge of the ear cups.
You can program these lights with the Logitech Windows software and choose your favorite color or rotate through colors or color-shifting animations. Any other Logitech G-series peripherals you have will sync lighting schemes for a matching effect.
Performance
There is a micro USB cable included with the headset for charging and a 3.5mm audio cable that includes an inline mic and a remote so you can use your smartphone or connect your headset to PS4 or Xbox One controllers.
You can also use the RCA to 3.5mm cable to hook your headset up to an Xbox 360, PS3, or any other device with RCA outputs. Or use the 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter to connect your headset mic to your Xbox 360 controller.
Connectivity far surpasses that of the Astro A50, but the Logitech G933 does lack a carrying case and a wireless charging stand. Wired connections offer a more seamless audio experience without periodic disconnects.
Use the Dolby and DTS surround sound to fully immerse yourself in the game, and individually adjust channels using the Logitech G app. While the surround sound doesn’t help you locate where the sound is coming from, it still offers a better experience than a headset without surround sound.
The overall sound quality of this headset is excellent. You can pinpoint distinct highs and lows throughout your gaming experience. You get an immersive sound field, even without surround sound.

Music performance
While some gaming headsets sound great while gaming and lack any luster when it comes to music, the Logitech G933 is a bit different. You’ll experience pleasant audio when listening to any of your favorite music, and you won’t have to switch over to your Beats headphones to do it.
Across multiple genres, you’ll notice deep bass, clear drum kicks, and energetic high levels. It won’t blow your ears out, but you can feel the music. You’ll enjoy full highs and lows that are balanced and even.
