Ed Lozano – Touring Expert Guitarist

Ed is our professional touring guitarist. He’s traveled around the world and tested out tons of audio equipment. He wants to help change the world, one piece of audio advice at a time.

Why am I giving advice on All Sound Lab?

I’m just paying it forward. Much of the information I found valuable and applicable was freely passed on to me. When I was a teenager, my social hangouts were the guitar shop and the record store. Through my love of music and audio, I’ve made friendships that have lasted a lifetime.

What was the first piece of audio equipment I owned?

When I was 15, I had a hi-fi system. It was made up of a turntable, receiver, and cassette player. There was a loudness knob that made the bass sound more distorted. The guys at the record store suggested that I get an equalizer. Suddenly, EQ made learning guitar parts from records more accessible.

When was the first time I discovered I loved audio?

I was 6 or 7 when I went to a birthday party, and they had a piñata. The birthday girl was then blindfolded and given a broom handle. Her father spun her around three times and pointed her toward the sacrificial piñata. She whacked the papier-mâché creature to hell and back as candy, coins, small toys, and various knick-knacks exploded from the piñata’s innards. I ignored the previously-mentioned items and grabbed a small box containing a little red transistor radio with a white mono earpiece. AM radio DJs became my imaginary mentors, and they served up glorious musical morsels with short anecdotes about the music, artist, or whatever. I really didn’t understand what I was listening to. I just knew that it was magical.

How much have I invested in audio equipment in my lifetime?

Enough to feed a small developmental country for a year.

What got me interested in the importance of high-quality audio?

When I was a kid, we were poor. I’m talking powdered eggs and bricks of government cheese, poor. But, as a preteen, things started to turn around, and my father started making money. My dad and uncle were audiophiles. They both emigrated to the USA with dreams of making money and finally had enough to indulge themselves. Little by slowly, they armed a home music system, I had never seen before. Component after component came into our home. Dad would sell and upgrade. The two brothers compared notes and bought more gear. One day, Dad came home with a toothy grin all over his face. In his arms, he cradled a Technics SP-10 turntable that he managed to buy from a radio station. He was so happy and gently began to spin Nat King Cole, Harry Belafonte, and Johnny Mathis records. I hated Johnny Mathis, but Dad would listen intently and describe the different sounds and subtle nuances that his new turntable produced. Of course, I was not allowed to touch it.

Why am I giving advice on All Sound Lab?

Hey – my name is Calum Vaughan, and I’m giving advice on All Sound Lab as I have a passion for helping people around the world improve their music technology skills. I’ve got 15 years of experience in using audio equipment and I’ve gathered a ton of knowledge about everything from speakers to synthesizers, and I’m here to share it with you.

What was the first piece of audio equipment I owned?

The first piece of audio equipment I owned would have to be my Hohner electric guitar and a VOX Amplifier for it, gifted to me by my older sister. However, the first audio equipment I bought myself was the Korg EMX-1, an all-in-one drum machine, synthesizer, and sequencer. Shortly after this I bought a Zoom 8-track digital recorder, and before I knew it I was recording full pieces of music!

When was the first time I discovered I loved audio?

I was always brought up around loud music in my living room and my dad playing the guitar, so my passion for audio technically started from birth! However, I discovered that I had a passion for audio technology when I first laid my hands on the DAW Reason 3. Me and my dad loved The Prodigy and I asked him how I could make music like them. He didn’t know, googled it, and it turned out they used Reason 3. We bought it shortly after, and I was instantly addicted. It was the software that led to me buying my first hardware, the Korg EMX-1.

How much have I invested in audio equipment in my lifetime?

Sheesh, that’s a hard one to answer. If we’re just talking about hardware such as synthesizers, speakers, guitars, and headphones, I think I must have spent around $5,000. However, this figure would increase massively if I considered things such as DAWs, the computers to run music software, plugins and VSTs, cables, and guitar/synthesizer services. I reckon if I included all of that I’d be nearing $20,000!

What got me interested in the importance of high-quality audio?

I was producing music from around age 13 until I was 18, and up until this point I was producing creative although low-quality and badly recorded music. However, I moved city for university when I was 18 and went to study Music, Technology, and Innovation at De Montfort University. Every concert and every class was conducted using Genelecs, the industry standard when it comes to monitor speakers. It felt like I was hearing sound for the first time again – this has to be the moment I truly appreciated the need for high-quality audio.

Jesse Alexander – DJ Master

Jesse is our pro DJ around here. He’s worked as a professional for seven years. Here’s here to share his master tips and equipment setup with you so you don’t have to waste your money or time trying to figure out the perfect setup for you. When he’s not working on new music, he’s testing out the latest turntables and working on improving his keyboard skills.

Why am I giving advice?

Because I mostly taught myself and hit the ground running against all obstacles. I didn’t have anyone to help me financially or professionally I made it happen from the ground up.

First piece of audio equipment I owned?

That would have been a cheap midi controller to try and create music with but alas, I can’t play the keys very well. I first discovered I loved audio when I was a kid. My childhood dream was to be a singer and performer.

How much have I invested in audio equipment?

Probably a total of 5-7 thousand dollars overall. Of course life happens and as such I don’t own a lot of it anymore but so it goes.

What got me interested in the importance of high quality audio?

Even if your work currently caters to a small audience having high quality mixes and masters still puts you on the same playing field as the big dogs when it comes to the industry. It’s a process that takes a lot of time but it’s super rewarding!

Why am I giving advice on All Sound Lab?

I know what a significant difference a quality sound system can make. While some people prefer a simply use their television speakers when watching a movie or show, a solid sound system can take a basic viewing and turn it into an immersive experience. I want to help others discover

What was the first piece of audio equipment I owned?

A Song Walkman! I would play my favorite cassette tapes as I walked to and from school. Being able to “make” my own tape and take it with me changed the way I viewed music.

When was the first time I discovered I loved audio?

I was watching a movie with a buddy of mine. He had a surround sound system. Until then, I didn’t get why it was such a big deal. After watching that movie, I realized how much of a difference audio truly makes.

How much have I invested in audio equipment in my lifetime?

More than I would care to admit!

What got me interested in the importance of high-quality audio?

The realization that anyone could have a movie-going experience right in their own homes. High-quality audio makes such a drastic difference in the way we interact with music, movies, or television.
